Dashas are the timing system of Vedic astrology. The Vimshottari system covers a 120-year cycle shared among the nine planets. The first period at birth belongs to the lord of your birth nakshatra. How much of it remains depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra.
| Mahadasha | Years |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 |
| Venus | 20 |
| Sun | 6 |
| Moon | 10 |
| Mars | 7 |
| Rahu | 18 |
| Jupiter | 16 |
| Saturn | 19 |
| Mercury | 17 |
Sub-periods
Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas in the same order, starting with its own lord. The length of each is the mahadasha years Γ the sub-lord's years Γ· 120. For example, SaturnβJupiter lasts 19 Γ 16 Γ· 120 β 2.5 years.
Reading a period
A dasha gives the results of its planet: the houses it rules, the house it sits in, its strength and dignity, and its relationship with the sub-period lord. Events happen when the dasha promises them and transits (gochar) trigger the same houses. That is why our reports always check the last six years of dashas against your real life before predicting ahead.
